Viral infections of pigs used for medical education. A Japanese experience.
Abstract Infectious viruses pose a threat to all living organisms, including humans, and can cause significant morbidity. Previous experience with pigs in medical education and research, rather than in domestic control settings, has led to a unique perspective on viral infections in swine. In this article, common porcine infectious diseases have been listed, based mainly on the authors' experience thus far. For example, young domestic pigs that were used in surgical training and infected with hepatitis E were subjected to quarantine and isolation treatment, and attempts were made to develop a DNA vaccine for swine...

Occupational Exposure to Blood, Hepatitis B Vaccine Knowledge and Uptake among Medical Students in Cameroon.
In this study we describe the knowledge of risk factors for HBV infection, history of accidental exposure to blood, awareness of HBV vaccine and the vaccination status among medical students in Cameroon.Methods/Findings: A cross-sectional survey was carried out using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire among 111 medical students. Sixty-two (55.9%) had had at least one accidental exposure to blood since the beginning of their medical training, with a median of 2 (IQR, 1-3) exposures. There was a good knowledge of the risk factors for HBV infection and awareness of HBV vaccine among participants. However, only 20 (1...

Occupational exposure to blood, hepatitis B vaccine knowledge and uptake among medical students in Cameroon
In this study we describe the knowledge of risk factors for HBV infection, history of accidental exposure to blood, awareness of HBV vaccine and the vaccination status among medical students in Cameroon. Methods: In April 2012, a cross-sectional survey was carried out using a pretested self-administered questionnaire among 111 medical students. Results: Sixty-two students (55.9%) had had at least one accidental exposure to blood since the beginning of their medical training, with a median of 2 (IQR, 1-3) exposures. There was a good knowledge of the risk factors for HBV infection and awareness of HBV vaccine among participa...

Factors associated with vaccination for hepatitis B, pertussis, seasonal and pandemic influenza among French general practitioners: A 2010 survey.
Abstract Our objectives were to describe the vaccine coverage (VC(1)) for some occupational vaccines (hepatitis B, pertussis, seasonal and pandemic influenza) among French General Practitioners (GPs(2)) and to study the factors associated with being vaccinated for each of these four diseases. We surveyed a representative national sample of 1431 self-employed GPs in France. Self-reported VC was 76.9% for 2009/10 seasonal influenza, 73.0% for hepatitis B, 63.9% for pertussis and 60.8% for A/H1N1 pandemic influenza. The factors associated with reporting being vaccinated were quite different from one vaccine to anothe...

Seroprevalence of hepatitis B and C virus infections among health students and health care workers in the najran region, southwestern Saudi Arabia: The need for national guidelines for health students
Conclusion: It is mandatory to develop a structured program to raise awareness among HS, and current health colleges' curricula should be upgraded to address these issues early. The HS should be considered new recruits to health services in terms of their initial screening for blood-borne infections and vaccination against HBV. The development of a novel continuing medical education and pre-employment awareness program for HCWs is recommended to address the following: blood-borne diseases transmitted occupationally, standard precautions to prevent occupationally transmitted blood borne infections, and safe injection practices.

Implementation of an electronic medical record does not change delivery of preventive care for HIV-positive patients
Conclusions: As EMR implementation expands, it is important to evaluate the effects that EMRs have on patient outcomes, including preventive health provision. Our study showed that after implementation of an EMR, the provision of most preventive care measures did not improve. This finding is in agreement with many published studies. Some studies have found positive effects from EMRs that may be attributable to specific aspects of EMRs. Further study of the effect of specific EMR attributes on health care outcomes is needed.

Promoting improved utilization of laboratory testing through changes in an electronic medical record: experience at an academic medical center
This case study over time describes five years of experience with interventions to improve laboratory test utilization at an academic medical center. The high-frequency laboratory tests showing the biggest declines in order volume post intervention were serum albumin (36%) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (17%). Introduction of restrictions for 170 high-cost send-out tests resulted in a 23% decline in order volume. Targeted interventions reduced mis-orders involving several “look-alike” tests: 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D; manganese, magnesium; beta-2-glycoprotein, beta-2-microglobulin. Lastly, target...
